Moving forward begins by looking back.

It is only when we revisit what has happened to us, and how those experiences have shaped our thoughts and behaviours, that we can begin to change, if we choose to.

In this powerful memoir-in-essays, Dr. Nancy Dome does just that. She takes you on a deeply personal journey from a childhood marked by poverty in West Hollywood, through classrooms in Court and Community Schools, to life-changing experiences abroad. Each chapter is rich with complex relationships, challenges, beauty, and abundant love—all at once.

Rather than feeling shame around our lived experiences, this book invites us to view them through the light of hindsight, where reflection becomes understanding, and understanding becomes growth. These moments become building blocks.

This is not about forced forgiveness, forgetting injustice, or giving people or systems a pass. Instead, it is about releasing their hold on us so we can acknowledge our pain and move forward with greater awareness, intention, and choice.

At its core, this book introduces Compassionate Dialogue as a guiding North Star for living a full and honest life. It explores how our emotions shape our actions, how we can trust our intuition, lean into fear, set boundaries, and advocate for ourselves, while extending grace to ourselves and others.

This is how we begin to heal, not only ourselves, but the world around us.
