Mertell Walker was born in Jamaica, in the West Indies. She came to England in the 1950s, married, and raised six children, all of whom are now grown with children and grandchildren of their own.
Her greatest passions were reading and writing. She could never stay away from anything with printed words. Over the years, she began writing stories, poems, and sketches, not with the goal of being published, but simply for the joy of creating. At home, she was often teased for cluttering the house with papers and magazines.
Her first poem, The Meaning of Love, was published in SADACCA’s Afro-Caribbean magazine, ACE. She later attended English classes at SADACCA, led by Mrs Carmen Franklin, who encouraged her to continue writing and to pursue having her work published more widely.
Mertell eventually produced a booklet of her work, the proceeds of which went to support the education of women in Malawi — something she was very proud of.
Writing brought her deep joy. We hope you feel that same joy, connection, and warmth as you read her poems and plays.
